renal dysplasia Corgi

7 month old FS Welsh Pembroke Corgi. Pre-anesthetic blood work BUN 63, SDMA 16, creat 1.5, SpG 1.015, manual UA did not show evidence of infection. Collected urine today for C&S. Asymptomatic. Grossly, would you have concerns for renal dysplasia?

Abnormal kidneys which is indicative of renal dysplasia with differential diagnoses being prior renal injury – hypoxia (utero at time of partus), bacteria nephritis, toxins, or AKI. Would need a biopsy for an etiological diagnosis although will not change the management. Renal dysplasia is important if breeding animal.

Thank you, Dr. Lobetti. Could you help me describe what makes these kidneys more abnormal looking? It seems like there is adequate contrast between cortex and medulla, but lack of papillae. Just trying to get more confident about making this call.

Renal dysplasia can look like a number of things such as displaced pelvices, nodular cortex, vascular disarray or fairly unremarkable. In this case there is some minor pyelectasia and some cm definition loss and brighter cortices. In addition to renal dysplasia i would be concerned for acute insult such as lepto or toxin and always rule out addisons in these unexplainable renal failure cases. Renal bx always necessary for renal dysplasia dx.
